The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area offers a beautiful retreat from the populated areas nearby. As the largest urban national park in the United States, it offers 500 miles of hiking trails for for its 5 million neighbors, as the park extends from the city of Los Angeles, home to 3.9 million, to the San Fernando Valley, home to 1.7 million people.

Some of the most popular hikes are in Solstice Canyon, with trails studded with ruins of homes that were once privately owned by several families; the Swinneys, the Kellers, and more.

The Roberts Family

Fred Roberts and his wife, who owned the Roberts Market chain of stores in LA, were the last owners of Solstice Canyon from the 1940s to the 1970s. They found the property on a drive, and arranged to rent the hunting cabin for their weekend retreat. They loved the place so much they made plans to move there full time. They had a home built in 1952, designed by renowned architect Paul Revere Williams.

The Roberts era is absolutely fascinating. The home, the ponds, the corral full of exotic animals; it’s a wild time in California. The best place we’ve found to learn about it is this video, which lets you take a hike and tour with Ranger Aaron.

Isn’t that a fantastic tour? Ranger Aaron knows his facts, and the photos are a wonderful opportunity to see this property in its heyday.

The Solstice Canyon Blanket

Our blanket evokes this special landscape with a pattern that shows the canyons, peaks, and vegetation of this beautiful reserve. The pattern is unnapped to show the edges of this intricate pattern, and finished with a blanket-stitched edge.

Solstice Canyon

California’s Rising Sun Trailhead offers spectacular views of Solstice Canyon, home to many weathered formations in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. The largest urban national park in the United States offers 500 miles of hiking trails. Colorful bands represent powerful creeks that have carved canyons among the famed peaks: Sugarloaf, Lady Face, and Saddle Peak. Bands of chaparral cover the mountains, and triangular shapes represent local and imported trees, alive with wild parrots.
